Trips March - June 2010

Trips Programme for New Trampers

In 2006, 2007 and 2008 the New Plymouth Tramping Club has run a series of easy tramps (3-4 hours) and fit easy tramps (3-6 hours) on Sundays at roughly four week intervals which were open to the public ( by application). These tramps proved popular despite adverse weather conditions on some occasions. It is continuing to organize such tramps at three to four week intervals in 2009 and 2010.

The tramps through to the end of the second quarter of 2010 will be as follows:

Sunday 7 March: York Loop Track
This is an easy tramp of 3 to 4 hours in the Mt Egmont National Park from the end of York Road. It gives a taste of Taranaki’s historical past by following the railway line used to transport metal quarried on the mountain. Many sights of interest include a giant crusher.

Sunday 11 April: Photographic Peak
This is a fit/easy tramp of 6 hours which will go up the Mangorei Track in the Pouakai Ranges area of Egmont National Park, branching off to the peak. After the climb to the peak we will go on to the Pouakai hut for lunch with perhaps a look at the tarns before returning.

Sunday 9 May: Dawson Falls to Wilkies Pools and Jackson’s Lookout
This is a fit/easy tramp of 4 to 5 hours. From Dawson Falls in Egmont National Park we will go up to Wilkies Pools then on the Round the Mountain Track to Jackson’s Lookout and return via the Ridge Track

Sunday 13 June: Ngatoro/Waiwhakaiho Circuit
This is a fit/easy tramp of 4 to 5 hours in the Mt Egmont National Park from the Mangaoraka car park up the Ngatoro Track to North Egmont and then down the Veronica and Waiwhakaiho Tracks back to the cars.

These tramps will suit people wishing to give tramping a go. If you go on two and would like to participate further you can do so by joining the club for the modest sub of $20 per year.

As an alternative, if you can tramp on a Wednesday, we alternate easy and fit/easy tramps throughout the year and you would be made welcome to these.

For information on the tramps call Dave Stewart on 758 4446

Should you wish to become a member straight away, call Club Treasurer Derek Andrews on 753 9855 and you will receive a copy of our latest trips programme which gives details of our tramps for the coming quarter.
